RIZIN – 12/31/2017: Horiguchi, Asakura wins tournament – Full Results

RENA, with a full make-up on, was smiling and singing at the walk out. In contrary, Kanna Asakura looked nervous and determined.

In the final of women’s super-atomweight tournament, when everyone thought RENA was going to win, Asakura surprised everybody.

Obviously, Asakura’s game plan was to keep a distance to not get hit and take RENA down to the ground and that is what she did.

In her first take down attempt, RENA actually grabbed the rope to defended but Asakura shot in again and scored a take down. And from there RENA really couldn’t do anything. Asakura quickly got on her back and choked RENA out with a rear naked choke.

For many Japanese fans this was a huge upset but when you really look at who RENA has been fighting, this is actually not a big surprise. In any sports, when you keep fighting lesser opponent under the very protected environment there is no way that athlete would improve.

Lets hope RENA will realize this and come back strong in year 2018.
