Jedrzejczyk vs. Namajunas title fight added to UFC 217

Jedrzejczyk vs Namajunas

A third title fight has been added to November’s UFC 217 card as women’s strawweight champ Joanna Jedrzejczyk (14-0) defends her title for a remarkable sixth time against the always formidable Rose Namajunas (6-3). UFC officials announced the news on Tuesday.

UFC 217 will be held Nov. 4 from Madison Square Garden in New York City. Michael Bisping will defend his middleweight title against Georges St-Pierre in the headliner, while bantamweight champ Cody Garbrandt puts his belt on the line against TJ Dillashaw in the co-main event.

Jedrzejczyk remains unbeaten in her pro career and is still the only strawweight champion the organization has had since she first won the title in March 2015 by knocking out Carla Esparza at UFC 185. Joanna “Champion” has defended the belt five times since then racking up wins over Jessica Pene, Valerie Letourneau, Claudia Gadelha, Karolina Kowalkiewicz, and most recently Jessica Andrade at UFC 211 in May.

The 30-year-old Polish fighter is a former multi-time Muay Thai World Champion and presently trains out of American Top Team in Coconut Creek, Fla. Four of Joanna’s professional MMA wins have been by knockout and one by submission.

Namajunas was the runner-up on “The Ultimate Fighter 20” and challenged Carla Esparza for the inaugural UFC strawweight title in the season finale in Dec. 2014. Following the loss to Esparza, Namajunas earned submission victories over Angela Hill and Paige VanZant and a decision over Tecia Torres.

Following a “Fight of the Night” split decision loss to Karolina Kowalkiewicz in July 2016, “Thug Rose” rebounded this past April with an impressive submission win over a surging Michelle Waterson at UFC on FOX 24. A brown belt in BJJ, Namajunas has finished five of her six career wins by submission.
