Top-ranked welterweights Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson (13-2-1) and Jorge “Gamebred” Masvidal (32-12) are slated to clash at UFC 217 in November. UFC officials recently announced the booking.
UFC 217 will be held Nov. 4 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Michael Bisping will defend his middleweight title against Georges St-Pierre in the main event.
Thompson is the No. 1 ranked welterweight in the UFC and is coming off a majority decision loss in a rematch against champ Tyron Woodley for the title at UFC 209 in March. Prior to that “Wonderboy” fought to a Draw against Woodley for the championship at UFC 205 last November.
Leading up to his back-to-back title bids, Thompson had been on a seven-fight winning that included wins over the likes of Rory MacDonald, Johny Hendricks, Jake Ellenberger and Robert Whittaker among others. Now 8-2-1 inside the octagon, the 34-year-old South Carolina native has finished seven of his 13 career wins by knockout and one by submission.
Masvidal is presently ranked No. 4 in the division and has gone 4-3 since returning to welterweight in July 2015. “Gamebred” most recently had a three-fight winning streak stopped by Demian Maia via split decision at UFC 211 in May.
Before that Masvidal had earned “Performance of the Night” honors for his second-round TKO finish of Donald Cerrone in January. And he earned wins over Ross Pearson and Jake Ellenberger in the latter half of 2016. The 32-year-old American Top Team product has finished 13 of his 32 career wins via knockout and two by submission.
