Two of the UFC’s arguably least popular champions defend their titles at UFC 215 with flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson taking on Ray Borg while women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes faces Valentina Shevchenko. UFC 215 takes place September 9th at the Rogers Palace in Edmonton, Alberta with three prelims webcast at UFC Fight Pass, four prelims broadcast on Fox Sports 1, and the five-fight main card broadcast as a pay-per-view.
The UFC’s flyweight division has been dominated by Demetrious Johnson since the title was inaugurated back in September 2012 when Johnson defeated Joseph Benavidez. Johnson has since defended the belt ten times which ties the record for most consecutive defenses. Along the way Johnson picked up bonuses for “Submission” and “Knockout” of the Night once each and “Performance of the Night” three times including a “Performance” bonus in his most recent defense against Wilson Reis in April. Entering this bout Johnson holds a record of 26-2 with his last loss being to Dominick Cruz for the bantamweight title in October 2011, thirteen fights ago. Ray Borg holds the #3 ranking behind Benavidez and Henry Cejudo who Johnson already defeated. Borg holds a record of 12-2, 5-2 in the UFC with only two wins in a row. So far in the Octagon Borg defeated Chris Kelades, Geane Herrera, #14 Louis Smolka, and Jussier Formiga with Forming being the most recent while his loss in the UFC was to Justin Scoggins in February 2016.
Amanda Nunes is making her second defense of the women’s bantamweight title as she rematches the #1 contender Valentina Shevchenko. 14-4 Nunes won the title with a first-round rear-naked choke of Miesha Tate in July 2016 then defended it against former champion Ronda Rousey in December with both those fights earning “Performance of the Night” bonuses. Nunes is on a five-fight win streak with an Octagon record of 7-1, her only loss in the UFC being to #7 ranked Cat Zingano by TKO in September 2014. In their first meeting in March 2016 Nunes defeated Shevchenko by unanimous decision in Nunes’ last non-title fight to date. Since then 14-2 Shevchenko defeated Holly Holm and Julianna Pena with the Pena fight earning “Fight of the Night”.
