RIZIN FF 4 – 12/29 & 31/2016:  “King Mo” Lawal confirmed to take on Cro-Cop, Herring replaces Carwin

On Monday, RIZIN FF held press conference in Tokyo and officially announced two replacements for the upcoming Open-weight Grand Prix.

Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal is going to face Mirko Cro-Cop in the opening round, and Heath Herring is coming out of 8-year retirement to take on Amir Aliakbari from Iran.

“King Mo” won last year’s RIZIN under 100 kg Grand Prix so he is going for the back-to-back GP title.

Lawal just fought last week in Bellator and defeated Satoshi Ishii. Yet obviously with just couple weeks of rest Lawal is feeling comfortable to, possibly fight three fights in two days.

According to RIZIN FF, Shane Carwin excused himself from the Grand Prix.

Nobuyuki Sakakibara explained, “Apparently, he hasn’t been able to train properly because of the custody battle against the ex-wife. Just in the month of December he would have to go to court four or five times, what we were informed. (from Carwin’s management)”

But Sakakibara criticized Carwin’s decision, “I can’t believe he easily gave up on something he signed and agreed. If he a fighter of that level, then we don’t want him. Big or small, everyone has their own personal problems but fighters are putting their lives on line, so what he did is rude to the other fighters (in RIZIN FF).”

Sounds like Carwin’s career in RIZIN FF is over before it even started.

Carwin will be replaced by UFC / PRIDE veteran Herring.

Herring is now 38 years old. Its been almost 8 years since his last MMA fight which was against Brock Lesnar in UFC  87.

Since he was more active as pro poker player than pro MMA fighter for the past 8 years, its fair to say that Herring is coming out of retirement.

Not sure how long he is planning on fighting though.
